The market town of Carlow nestles at the confluence of the rivers Barrow and Burrin and makes a picturesque base for this delightful holiday. It has a rich tapestry of history woven through its ancient streets with architecture telling the story of its growth since the arrival of the Normans in the twelfth century. Perhaps view the castle ruins or browse the arts and crafts boutiques. We explore the Wicklow Mountains, the largest of Ireland’s national parks with chocolate box vistas showcasing untamed forests, twisting mountain roads, fast flowing streams, the verdant Glendalough valley and pretty Avoca. Another gem is the charming city of Kilkenny which stands on the banks of the River Nore and is where you’ll find pleasant parks and an imposing castle. We also spend a day in Waterford – a thousand-year-old city, founded by the Vikings, with a lively waterfront, atmospheric streets, and a great sense of history.
