Your Excursions

Guided tour of Orkney
We set sail to Orkney, home to awesome landscapes with unspoiled beaches and powerful seas crashing against soaring cliffs. The islands also have an incredible history and parts have been declared World Heritage Sites. We enjoy an island guided tour. First stop is the island capital of Kirkwall, home to a twelfth century cathedral, then we continue to the picturesque old seaport of Stromness, with its harbourside cottages, warren of snaking lanes, nooks and crannies. Later, we visit the Neolithic village of Skara Brae, a Stone Age settlement that predates the pyramids and where you can step back an incredible 5000 years as you view homes with bed enclosures, dressers and seats. The tour also takes in the imposing Standing Stones of Stenness, possibly the oldest stone circle in the British Isles, with some of the monoliths standing at up to six metres high. The wow factor continues with a stop at the haunting Ring of Brodgar, built around 2500BC. We also call at the Italian Chapel, created as a place of worship and symbol of peace by Italian prisoners of war and where you can marvel at the stunning interior.

Mary Ann’s Cottage, Dunnet Bay Distillery & John O’Groats
We visit Mary Ann’s Cottage – a time capsule and an insight into 150 years of crofting life in the far north of Scotland. Afterwards, we move on to Dunnet Bay Distillery for an award-winning tour & taste before  receiving a goody bag with lip-smacking samples! We head to John O’Groats for some free time to visit the heritage centre or snap a photo at the famous signpost.

Wick & Thurso
A morning visit to the former Viking settlements of Wick, home to a heritage centre that tells the town’s story with fascinating artefacts. Later, we move on to Thurso, where you’ll find a pleasant seafront with a beach, esplanade and castle ruins as well as a circular well-house and a whisky distillery.

Castletown Hotel - Castletown
