Durham is steeped in a thousand years of history and presents a unique collection of historic landmarks, all bringing the past to life. Our cruise through the city on the meandering River Wear will treat you to the very best views of the Romanesque cathedral, Norman castle and ancient bridges. Afterwards, perhaps visit the Heritage Centre & Museum which is housed in a historic church with relics showcasing local history. Head to the Oriental Museum with its artefacts from ancient Egypt or discover Crook Hall where you’ll find a Jacobean drawing room and a silver garden. We spend a day in Barnard Castle, a market town named after the castle it’s built around. We also visit Whitby where you could follow in the footsteps of Captain Cook at his harbourside house, or view the abbey and church that were the settings for the gothic horror novel Dracula.
