Overview

Experience two distinctive and dynamic cities along with the Peak District treasure of Buxton. A highlight of this varied holiday is when we head into Manchester, a city often described as the capital of the north, to board our ship for a leisurely six hour sail along Britain’s grandest canal. On another day, eternally popular Chester is undoubtedly a historic gem with unique features such as half-timbered shops and City Walls that offer a leisurely stroll enhanced by views of the River Dee. Finally, beautiful Buxton has been attracting visitors since the fourteenth century and boasts landmarks such as Poole’s Cavern – a two-million-year-old limestone cave.

Your Excursions

Manchester Ship Canal Cruise

Relax and take in the scenery as you sail through Britain’s grandest canal. Covering the thirty-five miles between Liverpool and Salford Quays, you’ll glide through locks and under bridges that have changed little in a hundred years. Feast your eyes on the spectacular landscape showcasing splendid architectural and natural sights as you listen to the commentary telling the story of how this impressive waterway shaped the city of Manchester.

Buxton

Marvel at the town’s centrepiece – the Grade I listed Crescent and view the Devonshire Dome – the largest unsupported dome in Europe. Hop on a Victorian trambus and don’t miss Poole’s Cavern where you can witness evidence of prehistoric life dating from Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

Chester

Discover the endless charms of Chester. Perhaps walk the old City Walls to get a bird’s eye view of the city centre and the River Dee. Visit the cathedral, a beautiful building that began life as a Saxon Minster, or discover the Roman amphitheatre, the castle and The Rows – maybe take a boat trip?
