Sensational sightseeing awaits as we head to Sligo, a picturesque coastal town that inspired the poet Yeats’s greatest work and where some of the biggest waves in Western Europe crash down on the golden beach. We explore the breathtaking Wild Atlantic Way and cross the Michael Davitt Bridge to Achill Island, Ireland’s largest isle with its sleepy villages, powdery beaches and sky-scraping Mount Slievemore. On another day we venture out to Enniscrone, the Emerald Isle’s loveliest seaside resort with its sandy dunes and magnificent vistas in all directions. You’ll also have a free day in Sligo to follow in the footsteps of the famous writer and feast your eyes on the beautiful seascapes that Yeats so lovingly described.
Day One. We journey to Cairnryan for our ferry crossing to Ireland then continue to the Sligo Park Hotel & Leisure Club.
Day Two. This morning we follow the spectacular Atlantic Coast Drive, overlooking the ocean and the island of Clare, arriving at Achill Island. This off the beaten track gem is home to a Neolithic tomb and a deserted village that stands as a poignant reminder of the Great Famine.
Day Three. Another delightful day as we head into the heart of the historic port town of Sligo for independent sightseeing. Perhaps visit the thirteenth century abbey with its intricate carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculptures or head to the Niland Centre and view contemporary art. Alternatively, the County Museum houses an exhibition detailing Sligo’s Stone Age past.
Day Four. Today’s gem is enchanting Enniscrone, Ireland’s favourite seaside resort. Relax on the five kilometre stretch of sandy beach or perhaps head to the seaweed baths for a therapeutic and relaxing treatment. Try your hand at pitch n putt or enjoy a pint of Guinness in one of the friendly pubs.
Day Five. After breakfast we head for our return ferry then continue home.
