This sightseeing holiday is based firstly in Perth, home to the fascinating Black Watch Museum set inside Balhousie Castle and telling the story of the iconic Black Watch Regiment. Elsewhere in this royal burgh you’ll find Elcho Castle, a striking sixteenth century fortified mansion standing proudly on the banks of the River Tay with views over the countryside from its mighty battlements. Out and about we take in the tourist hub of Fort William, distinguished St Andrews, the stunning Trossachs, quaint Callander, splendid Scone Palace and pretty Pitlochry. We then move across to the west coast harbour town of Oban and take in some of Scotland’s most glorious scenery. Oban’s waterfront is busy with boats setting sail for the islands and the town boasts a level esplanade and whisky distillery as well as Pulpit Hill where you can experience stunning views across the Firth of Lorne.
Your Holiday Itinerary
We make our way to Perth, with rest stops along the way, and then check into the Mercure Hotel, for our three night stay.
A morning visit to Scone Palace which stands proudly amidst beautiful parkland and is a listed historic house where Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II were all crowned. Explore the State Rooms where Queen Victoria was entertained en route to Balmoral and view the fine furniture and objects d’art including the needlework of Mary Queen of Scots. From here head back to Queen’s View the famous vantage point enjoyed by Queen Victoria then, we continue to Pitlochry for free time in this traditional town.
We journey to St Andrews where you might like to stroll along the beach, visit the town’s museum, explore the cathedral ruins or how about having a coffee in the café where Prince William met Catherine Middleton. We return via Dundee to visit the V&A, Scotland’s first museum dedicated to design before heading back to our hotel in Perth.
We check out of our hotel and call firstly in Callander for some free time. We then wind our way through breathtaking Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, taking in the mountains, glens and lochs, before arriving in Oban to check into the Columba Hotel for three nights.
Our treat today is picturesque Fort William where movies such as Braveheart, Harry Potter and Highlander have all been filmed.
A day at leisure to relax or explore Oban at your own pace. Perhaps head up to McCaig’s Tower and admire the views and peaceful gardens or take a boat trip to the Isle of Mull.
After breakfast, farewell to bonnie Scotland as we journey home.
