Enchanting Constable Country is named after renowned artist John Constable and is so easy on the eye it’s little wonder the area has inspired many writers and painters. In fact, there are few places more breathtakingly picturesque. We make the most of our time in this stunning part of the country with a guided tour of the pretty villages that present a perfect blend of heritage and beauty. We include East Bergholt, a sleepy settlement on the River Stour where Constable was born in 1776 as well as Flatford, the setting for perhaps his most famous painting, ‘The Hay Wain’. We also visit the seaside haven of Aldeburgh and enjoy a cruise on the River Deben.
Constable Country & Flatford Bridge Cottage guided tour
Enjoy a guided tour of Constable Country taking in quaint villages with their timber framed cottages along with the breathtaking landscapes captured on canvas by one of the greatest ever British artists. Gems include Dedham, Flatford Mill which was owned by the Constable family, the village of East Bergholt where the artist was born, Capel St Mary and impossibly pretty Flatford Bridge Cottage with its traditional thatched roof.
Aldeburgh & River Deben Cruise
We make our way to the coastal escape of Aldeburgh, onetime home of the composer Benjamin Britten and where you’ll find a pebble beach flanked by fishermen’s huts and pastel painted nineteenth century holiday villas. Perhaps visit the Red House, the home where Britten wrote his greatest works or browse the antique shops on the high street. From here, we continue to Waldringfield where we board the MV Jahan for a relaxing two hour cruise on the sparkling River Deben.
