The fabulous port city of Cardiff hugs the south coast of Wales where the River Taff meets the Severn Estuary. Proclaimed Wales’s capital in 1955, it is home to Edwardian architecture and a stylish waterfront housing the Millennium Centre and the Mermaid Quay leisure complex. We include a visit to Cardiff Castle followed by an outing to leafy Hayes. We spend a day at the seaside in Tenby, a town established by the Normans and regarded as the prettiest coastal resort in Wales. Look forward to a scenic drive through the Brecon Beacons, a diverse landscape with prehistoric caves and Roman ruins and where we enjoy a thrilling train trip on the Mountain Railway.
Cardiff Castle & Hayes
Telling a story dating back over 2000 years, Cardiff’s gothic castle started life as a Roman fort, became a Norman castle then a Victorian gothic fantasy with gargoyles, furnished rooms and later, wartime shelters. From here, we continue to Hayes, the main shopping area of Cardiff with prestigious old library and St David’s Hall.
This medieval settlement is enclosed by ancient walls with a maze of narrow streets, a fifteenth century church and a fascinating Tudor Merchant’s House – not to mention lovely blue flag beaches.
Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway
We head into the Brecon Beacons National Park where we board the Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway and enjoy stunning views as the train steams along the Taf Fechan Reservoir before climbing to Torpantau.
