The enchanting Black Forest region brings to mind visions of ancient, thickset woodland, shimmering ponds and fairytale villages with welcoming beer gardens. Our holiday is based in Oberharmersbach, a chocolate box hamlet in the heart of the Black Forest with a relaxed rustic charm. We make the most of our time in this gorgeous part of Europe with visit to delights such as Triberg, home to Germany’s highest waterfall where the River Gutach thunders down. We also spend time in the refined spa town of Baden-Baden which hugs the banks of the River Oos and has a reputation as a hang-out for the rich and famous. Another holiday highlight is our day taking in pretty Freiburg, Germany’s southernmost major town, then continuing onwards to the glittering waters of Lake Titisee.
Your Holiday Itinerary
Day One. We journey to Hull for the overnight ferry to the continent enjoying dinner, entertainment and breakfast on board.
Day Two. We make our way to Oberharmersbach and check into the Baren Hotel for our five night stay.
Day Three. Our first Black Forest treat takes us through the picturesque kinzig and Elz Valleys to the Glotter Valley, arriving in the ancient village of St Peter where you might like to visit the beautiful baroque church. From here, we continue to the delightful clock making town of Fürtwangen with its German Cuckoo Clock Museum where exhibits range from a Stone Age calendar to atomic timepieces. Triberg is our next stop, home to Germany’s highest waterfall and to the Black Forest Museum which boasts Europe’s biggest barrel organ collection and the world’s largest cuckoo clock.
Day Four. Sightseeing today begins with a trip to Freiburg where you might like to wander around the Munsterplatz – a delightful cobbled square that encircles the mighty Minster of Our Lady gothic church and is also flanked by the ornate sixteenth century Merchants Hall. Later, we move on to Titisee where you might like to take a boat trip on the tranquil lake.
Day Five. First up today is the elegant spa town of Baden Baden, home to the Faberge Museum, the opulent kurhaus casino and a funicular railway that climbs Mount Merkur offering amazing views. Perhaps treat yourself to a horse and carriage ride around this graceful town. From here we travel along the Schwarzwald Hochstrase in the foothills of the Black Forest - Germany’s oldest panoramic road - reaching Mummelsee, the highest lake in the Black Forest. This tourist magnet is steeped in the myths and legends of nymphs and underwater kings!
Day Six. Enjoy a free day to relax or maybe use the complimentary ticket available from your hotel to take the train ride to the traditional town of Zell.
Day Seven. Auf wiedersehen Germany, as we head to our overnight ferry back to Hull, enjoying dinner, entertainment and breakfast on board.
Day Eight. We make our way home.
