Board your train at Glasgow and head to historic Carlisle. Located in Cumbria, this border city boasts attractions such as a 900-year-old castle located close to the remains of Hadrian’s Wall and housing the turret where Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner. Carlisle also has a medieval cathedral with beautiful stained glass windows and the impressive Prior’s Tower within its grounds. There are interesting museums such as the airport’s Aviation Museum and the Guildhall Museum which is housed in a medieval dwelling. Leafy Rickerby Park on the banks of the River Eden is the city’s lungs and features a Victorian folly tower as well as a poignant war memorial.
The County Hotel is located in the heart of the city with most attractions within a few minutes’ walk. The hotel has a restaurant and late night bar serving snacks.
