There really is no better way to uncover Europe’s bounty of treasures than on a glENtON Grand European Tour. These unmissable adventures present a fresh itinerary every year and our 2017 holiday takes in the Black Forest, sophisticated Milan, Eternal City of Rome, idyllic islands of Sardinia and Corsica, coastal city of Genoa, Switzerland’s lovely Lausanne on the shores of Lake Geneva then finally the French capital of Paris.
Highlights include pretty Freiburg, Germany’s southernmost major town where you’ll find a warm, Mediterranean ambience and a delightful old quarter. Triberg boasts a lofty cascading waterfall and is regarded as the birthplace of the cuckoo clock. Majestic Milan presents an alluring blend of medieval and modern buildings then there’s the Eternal City of Rome where stunning landmarks include the breathtaking Pantheon – a circular temple dating from 27BC and one of the best preserved of all ancient Roman buildings. Civitavecchia is a gem to explore with its well preserved Roman port and medley of architectural jewellery. We then set foot on heavenly Sardinia, a captivating island with a historic core where traces of early settlers such as the Phoenicians can be found. From here we set sail for Corsica, birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and where you’ll find his ancestral home. Back on mainland Europe we stop off at the gorgeous coastal city of Genoa then it’s into Switzerland and to lovely Lausanne, a city on the Swiss Riviera and home to the International Olympic Museum. A visit to romantic Paris completes a fascinating adventure.
Monday. We travel to Hull for our overnight ferry to the continent enjoying dinner, entertainment and breakfast on board.
Tuesday. We make our way to pretty Freiburg for our two night stay. Freiburg’s old town features the sprawling Munsterplatz cobbled square encircling the mighty Minster of Our Lady - a stunning church deemed by art historians as an architectural masterpiece of the Gothic period. This charming plaza is edged by the sixteenth century Merchants Hall, truly a fairytale building.
Wednesday. Today we head to Triberg, home of Germany’s highest waterfall, heir to the original Black Forest gateau recipe and nesting ground of the world’s biggest cuckoo clock!
Thursday. Auf wiedersehn Germany as we head to lovely Lake Lucerne for some free time before continuing to our overnight hotel in elegant Milan.
Friday. Morning at leisure in Milan where must see attractions include the magnificent cathedral, the red brick Castello Sforzescon and the Teatro alla Scala – Milan’s legendary opera house. Afterwards, we’re on the road to Rome for a two night stay.
Saturday. Wow! Look forward to a day in the Eternal City - Rome! We start with a guided tour of world famous landmarks include the Colosseum, Pantheon and Spanish Steps – then enjoy some free time - don’t forget to throw some coins in the lavish Trevi Fountain.
Sunday. We head to the seaport of Civitavecchia on the Tyrrhenian Sea for free time to enjoy the sights such as the Roman Baths, the cathedral dedicated to St Francis of Assisi, the Forte Michelangelo and the Vanvitelli Fountain. This evening we board our overnight ferry and set sail for sizzling Sardinia.
Monday. Buongiorno to Sardina as we step ashore and head to Cagliari and check into our hotel for a two night stay. Afterwards, your time is your own to be enchanted by this idyllic isle. Relax on one of the beautiful beaches or wander the narrow lanes lined with old stone dwellings that lead to pretty piazzas.
Tuesday. Another relaxing day soaking up Sardinia’s charms.
Wednesday. On the road this morning to catch the afternoon ferry to Corsica for our two night stay on this exquisite French island with its distinctive Italian flavour.
Thursday. This morning a local representative will call at your hotel to give you a taste of the history of the island along with some hints and tips to get your sightseeing off to a great start. Perhaps head to Ajaccio, the island capital and birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte or alternatively, the commune of Bonifacio is an ancient fortress town with a labyrinth of narrow lanes crammed with historic buildings.
Friday. Late morning we set sail for the port city of Genoa, capital of Italy’s Liguria region, and where we stay overnight.
Saturday. Free time to perhaps take a stroll down Genoa’s Via Garibaldi and admire the Gothic cathedral. Afterwards, our spectacular adventure continues as we journey to Switzerland and to stylish Montreux for a two night stay.
Sunday. Explore Lausanne, a city on the shores of Lake Geneva with a medieval centre. Attractions include a gothic cathedral with an ornate facade, the Olympic Museum and, of course, the sparkling crescent shaped lake where we relax on a boat trip.
Monday. We travel via Auxerre to our overnight hotel on the outskirts of Paris.
Tuesday. Enjoy free time this morning in the French capital perhaps taking in the Notre Dame or have some lunch on the banks of the Seine. In the afternoon, we journey to Zeebrugge for our ferry back to Hull with dinner, entertainment and breakfast on board.
Wednesday. We travel home after our amazing adventure.

All GLENTON continental holidays include dinner and breakfast onboard. Head to ‘The Kitchen’ buffet restaurant where your waiter will show you to your table and take your order if you wish to purchase any drinks. Then you’re free to help yourself from the wide selection of tasty dishes from around the world. At breakfast, choose from continental or a fully cooked menu. Alternatively if you fancy treating yourself, why not upgrade to The Brasserie Restaurant and enjoy fine dining with full waiter service?
Make your way to the Show Lounge and enjoy live bands throughout the evening – there’s even a dance floor if you fancy a wee boogie! Or slow the pace down at the Piano Bar where you can sip a cocktail as you listen to mellow music. Perhaps you’d like to catch a blockbuster movie at the cinema or try your luck at the casino.
